History of Moon ShadowsWe would like to begin with an introduction to our house, nicknamed "Moon Shadows" by the original owner-builder, Ken Edward, because of the moon's shimmering through the skylights at night.
In 1975 Ken Edward and his brother were fishing in a river near Big Sur when they came across an enormous redwood tree that had fallen in the forest. The minute he saw the redwood, Ken imagined a house made of redwood and glass. He was granted permission to cut up the tree and haul away the lumber. That tree was so big that they could not get a saw through the lower part of the trunk and had to leave eight feet in the canyon. All of the wood from that redwood tree went into building Moon Shadows except for two planks. Clint Eastwood reserved two solid slabs of redwood for the front doors of his home in Pebble Beach. Ken Edward went on to build other homes in Carmel Highlands and Pebble Beach, but this was his signature house—his first one—and he was in his early twenties when he built it!
This wonderland in Carmel Highlands is set on granite bedrock, built on Ohlone Indian ground. There is an Indian grinding stone and pestle to the left of the house near the back deck. The "magic stone," as we call it, has been authenticated by the University of California-Berkeley and cannot be removed from the property, even when the house is sold. < Prev | Home | History | Description | Activities | Rental Agent | Next > |
